The Making of Sumaira
the materials
Sumaira is made of EcoMix, a material derived from recycled paper. EcoMix blends traditional and contemporary craft—sustainable materials molded into traditional shapes perfected by artisans—that introduces a distinct earthiness to your space.
the process
Sumaira starts with recycled paper that’s shredded and mixed with water to create a pulp—the beginnings of EcoMix. The pulp is then combined with adhesive and chalk powder to create a paste that can be sculpted and molded into vessels.
molding and finishing
The prepared paste is stamped into a mold and allowed to dry. Once dry, the pieces are freed from the mold and sanded until smooth. Like traditional pottery, this is where glazes and paint are introduced and any finishing touches are made.
