The Making of Amos
Preparing the Clay
Starting with dry clay, the artisan adds water—a bit at a time—until the mixture is pliable: moist, but not too wet. They then knead the clay, like dough, removing air bubbles and creating a structurally sound and pliable terracotta that’s ready for throwing.
Throwing and Shaping
The prepared clay is thrown on the wheel for shaping. Using a few simple tools and some water, the artisan creates a base to work from, reaching in and guiding the clay up and out to create Amos’s classical form: specialized work that requires deft hands.
Firing and Finishing
Once Amos is complete, it is set aside to dry before being baked in the kiln at high temperatures. After the firing is complete, an artisan places the finishing touches—the same way its been done for centuries—sanding it until smooth and ready for display.
