behind the craft
The Art of Terracotta
Preparing the Clay
Starting with dry clay, the artisan adds water—a bit at a time—until the mixture is pliable: moist, but not too wet. They then knead the clay, like dough, removing air bubbles, creating a structurally sound and pliable clay that’s ready for throwing.

Throwing and Shaping
The prepared clay is ready for shaping on the wheel. Using a few simple tools, some water, and their hands, the artisan creates a base to work from, guiding the clay up and out to widen the shape. Once the form is complete, ornamental details, like handles, are added.

Firing and Finishing
The vessel is set aside to dry before being baked in the kiln at high temperatures. Once it comes out, the terracotta pot is ready for the finishing touches. An artisan might glaze or paint it to add color or sand the surface until it's smooth.
