American Artisans

Many Hands Make It: Made-to-Order Furniture

We partner with first- and second-generation artisans to craft each of our made-to-order furniture pieces, right here in the U.S. Our partners have been in the business for over a century, sticking to traditions that ensure a quality build—timeless pieces that are made to last.

From Framing to Finishing

Enter the factory and the first thing you’ll notice is the people—individuals that are highly skilled in a number of furniture-making processes—engaged in their craft, from building the frame, to sewing upholstery and perfecting the finishes. A different part of the process happens at each station: joinery, cushioning, pattern cutting, and more. By the time your selection is ready to be shipped to you, it has passed through many artisans’ hands, bringing to life a piece that’s crafted to stand the test of time, becoming a part of your home’s unique story.

Everything starts with a foundation: In this case, a handmade frame. Pieces of solid wood are carefully glued and nailed together—like completing a three-dimensional puzzle—to create the base of your piece. In the meantime, artisans at neighboring stations work on upholstery. Following a precise pattern, reminiscent of a dress maker’s, fabric is cut, measured, and sewn to fit your selection. After the frame has been filled and cushioned, upholstery can begin. An artisan drapes and pulls the fabric over the sides of the furniture, tucking, cutting, and detailing it so that not a seam or thread is out of place.
